Asano Takumino-kami - Lord of Ako in the Province of Harima. He was the Lord of the 47 Samurai and was killed early in the book.

Kira Kozukenosuke - Grand Master of Ceremonies for the Shogun.

Tokugawa Tsunayoshi - Shogun ruler of Japan.

Oishi Kuranosuke - Onof the chief retainers of Lord Asano, and the leader of the forty-seven samurai.

Oishi Chikara - Son of Kuranosuke, he is sixteen years old.

Jiro - A servant boy to Oishi Kuranosuke, the hero of the book. Jiro is reffered to in the book as "The Fly".

Haru - Jiro's Mother, a servant of little importance.

Matsu - Chief servent to Oishi Kuranosuke.

Yoshida Chuzaemon - Loyal retainer to Lord Asano.

Hara Soemon - Retainer of Lord Asano.

Okajima Yasoemon - Retainer of Lord Asano.

Ono - A Disloyal chief retainer of Lord Asano.

Lord Uesugi - Son of Kira Kozukenosuke and is protector.

Goro - Acolyte in the Buddhist temple Reikonin.

Otaka Gengo - Young retainer of Lord Asano who befriends Jiro.

Ichikawa Danjuro - A famous kabuki actor, founder of a dynasty of actors. The present one is Ichikawa Danjuro the Twelfth.

Okuno Shokan - A loyal but disagreeable samurai.

Usagi - A servant girl.

Kamoko - Servant in the floating world.

Chikamatsu Monzaemon - Playwright, sometimes called the Shakespeare of Japan.

O'Karu - A beautiful woman of the floating world.

Uma - A giant porter.
